Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) belongs to the Department of Chemical Sciences and Materials Technology of National Research Council in Italy (DSCTM-CNR). The general goals of the Institute are the development of research activities , the transfer technology and the professional training in the filed of innovative polymer based materials. The research activities are grouped into three main research fields:
1) Polymers, composites and nanocomposites with tailored functional properties: development, through the "chemical manufacturing", of innovative functionalities in molecular, macromolecular and solid systems with a different level of structural organization, characterization and methodology analysis related to the chemical modifications (bulk and surface);
2) Bio-materials and tissue engineering: development of biomaterials for tissue engineerign and study of the properties of living tissues;
3) Technologies for polymeric, composites and nanostructured materials: production processing, design and modelling with the aim to develop multi-functional sctructures for specific applications.
The main working sites are located in the Napoletan area (south Italy)
and are provided with laboratories in which new-generation scientific instruments in the filed of preparation and characterization of composites and nanocomposite materials are present.
At National and international level, IPCB works on several research activities in cooperation with Italian and foreign universities, research centres and companies. This leads the IPCB to be involved as participant and as principal investigator into European projects as well as into several national and international research projects in the field of biomedical, packaging, electronic, transport and building materials. The institute has a worldwide recognized level for papers on national and international journals, patents and spin-off companies which diffuse and transfer the technological know-out and produce and commercialize new technologies and materials. The IPCB is also involved in the research cooperation with the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Materials Engineering of the Sichuan University and is the main partner of a joint Research center named Multifunctional Polymers and Biomaterials research center established between the DSCTM-CNR and the Sichuan University.

The Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics (ISTEC) belongs to the National Research Council (CNR) and it is located in Faenza (Italy). Concerning the R&D on surfaces, the activities can be grouped into the following areas of interest: Energy, Aeronautical and Chemical.
Concerning the Aeronautical field, surfaces with a controlled wettability, from superhydrophobic to oleophobic or switching from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity, are produced as self-cleaning and anti-icing. Nanostructured thin films are obtained by a sol-gel method followed by a thermal treatment. The process provides nanostructured hybrid coatings and allows treating several kinds of materials (glass, metal, ceramic). Excellent de-wetting phenomena are ensured by coupling dynamic and static super-hydrophobicity on the same surface, reaching static contact angles as high as 179°. Activities are ongoing for the realization of antifouling, low friction surfaces for the naval field.
In the Energy sector ISTEC is involved in the production of thin and thick films for the production of energy (third generation photovoltaic cells, fuel cells) and energy harvesting (thermoelectric) via economic and easily scalable techniques (screen printing, ink jet, dip and spin coating, wet spray). Some activities are moreover devoted to the production of films able to reduce the energy consumption of mechanical parts (wear resistant and antifriction). Furthermore ceramic coatings by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from colloidal suspensions are currently under study on steel or other surfaces, both as fundamental aspects and applications in the fields of oxidic coatings and piezoelectric film structures. Electrical transient analysis provides real-time information on both film growth and charge-to-deposited mass correlations.
About the Chemical area, multifunctional textile substrates produced by ISTEC provides solutions for clean technology sector with a wide spectrum of application, ranging from water/air filtration to self-cleaning and antibacterial fabrics, exploiting the acquired experience on colloids and nanoparticles synthesis. Particularly, the sol gel method is used to induce the direct ceramization of textile with several materials. TiO2 nanoparticles provide active photocatalytic fabrics, hybrid oxide nanosols allow the development of flame resistance and also the tuning of wettability from hydrophobic to hydrophilic behavior and finally Ag nanoparticles produce antibacteric substrates.
